Munich - Bavaria Fiction has become the world’s first major film and series production house whose corporate environmental management system at its Munich headquarters – including the production sites of the long-running drama series “Storm of Love” and “The Rosenheim Cops” – has been successfully validated under the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS; registration number: DE-155-00375) and certified under ISO 14001.

EMAS is the world’s most demanding environmental management system, developed by the European Union and overseen by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. Under the leadership of Senior Sustainability Manager Tobias Wolf, the Bavaria Fiction project team coordinates environmental protection measures covering energy, water, business travel, vehicle fleet, resources and waste, with the strategic goal of reducing CO₂ emissions.

Marcus Ammon and Jan S. Kaiser, Managing Directors Bavaria Fiction:

“We’re more than thrilled that we are the first production company of this scale to be validated by EMAS. As a company, we recognise our social responsibility to contribute to environmental protection. Our environmental management system has helped us to continually improve our performance. EMAS enables us to benchmark ourselves through regular assessments, measure progress, identify potential for improvement and proactively address it.”

Since the introduction of the environmental management system, total emissions at the Munich headquarters have fallen by around 3% year-on-year—from 381 to 369 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents. A major driver was the increased electrification of the company-car fleet where emissions dropped by more than 13%, from 44 to 38 tonnes of CO₂. In the coming years Bavaria Fiction will pursue further ambitious environmental targets, including 4% cuts in energy and heat consumption, and a 5% reduction in business-travel-related CO₂ emissions by 2027.

Tobias Wolf, Senior Sustainability Manager at Bavaria Fiction:

“Environmentally conscious action has accompanied our productions for many years and is already standard practice on our sets. With our EMAS validation, we are now taking the next major step: we take a holistic view of sustainability and position it strategically at company level – with clear goals, structured processes and measurable progress.”

In Germany, Bavaria Fiction is a member of the “Green Shooting” working group, which – together with broadcasters, production companies, VoD services and film funders – has developed and continues to refine the Ecological Standards for Green Production. Since these standards were introduced in 2022, more than 50 Bavaria Fiction productions have been created in line with the guidelines. At its studio lot in Munich, the Bavaria Film Group offers ideal conditions for green production thanks to an ecologically sustainable energy supply.

About EMAS:

EMAS stands for Eco-Management and Audit Scheme and is the European premium system for implementing climate protection and sustainability in organisations from all sectors. It has a consistent stakeholder approach, an orientation of all processes towards sustainability aspects and legally regulated, auditable sustainability reporting. As an independent advisory body to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the Environmental Verification Committee (UGA) brings together different interest groups in the field of environmental and sustainability management and actively promotes the implementation and dissemination of EMAS. With its work, the UGA supports the Federal Government's goal of 5.000 EMAS sites by 2030. EMAS-registered organisations make an effective contribution to environmental protection, save costs and demonstrate social responsibility. EMAS ensures that all environmental aspects from energy consumption to waste and emissions are implemented in a legally secure and transparent manner.
